DOYLE DEFEATS McCALLUM IN GOVERNOR’S RACE

Democrat Jim Doyle defeated Republican Governor Scott McCallum on November 5th and will become Wisconsin’s 44th governor and the first Democrat to hold the state’s top position since 1986. Doyle captured 45 percent of the vote, while McCallum received 42 percent, and Libertarian Ed Thompson reached double-digits with 10 percent.

The race was the most expensive (and possibly the most negative) election in Wisconsin’s history. Early estimates show that as much as $20 million was spent on the gubernatorial election.

One of the most significant changes that will occur over the next two months will be the naming of state agency heads and division administrators who serve at the pleasure of the Governor. Considering the fact that Republicans have controlled the Governor’s office for 16 years, these changes will be drastic and could set the tone for the direction that the Doyle Administration will take over the next four years.

In other statewide races, Democrat Peg Lautenschlager defeated Republican Vince Biskupic in the state’s Attorney General race. Lautenschlager is a former state legislator, Winnebago County DA, and U.S. Attorney.

Incumbents emerged victorious in both the State Treasurer and Secretary of State contests. Republican State Treasurer Jack Voight defeated Democrat Dawn Marie Sass and Democratic Secretary of State Douglas LaFollette defeated Republican challenger Robert Lorge.
